Celebrating Community and Connection Through the Lens of 'Life is Service'
In the bustling world of hospitality, where service often goes unnoticed, Durham-based photographer and storyteller Jordan Abdur-Ra’oof invites us to pause and reflect on the human stories that make our communities thrive. His latest project, the 'Life is Service' photo series, is a heartfelt homecoming to the roots of his photography journey—a journey that began with a simple desire to share stories.
Reconnecting with Purpose
Jordan's passion for photography was ignited in 2016 during his time at Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration. Initially, he picked up a camera to uplift underrepresented communities through a blog. However, as he moved to New York City, the art of photography captivated him, and he found himself striving to capture the 'perfect' image. The 'Life is Service' series marks a return to his original purpose: using photography as a tool to highlight the humanity behind the businesses and individuals that define our communities.
Stories Behind the Lens
Every photograph in this series tells a story. While Jordan finds it challenging to pinpoint one most memorable encounter, he treasures the rewarding conversations he's had with each individual he's photographed. These interactions have filled him with inspiration and life, reinforcing the power of storytelling through photography.
Photography as a Tool for Awareness
Photography holds the unique ability to humanize industries and individuals often overlooked. In the hospitality sector, where connection is key, Jordan's work shifts the focus from mere service to the relationships and dedication that make it all possible. By capturing the human side of these businesses, he fosters a deeper sense of appreciation and connection within the community.
Art as a Catalyst for Transformation
Art, especially photography, mirrors society, reflecting its complexities and beauty. Through his lens, Jordan captures moments that might otherwise go unnoticed, offering viewers a chance to see their own stories reflected in others. His work encourages us to take a break from viral trends and reviews, and instead, connect with the places of gathering in a real, tangible, and inspiring way.
A Message of Recognition and Celebration
Through the 'Life is Service' exhibition, Jordan aims to convey the importance of recognizing the businesses and individuals who shape our daily lives. His goal is to shine a light on their hard work, passion, and dedication, celebrating their stories and fostering a greater sense of connection and appreciation within our communities.
Welcome to 'Life is Service'—a celebration of community, connection, and the spirit of hospitality. Join us in appreciating, understanding, and supporting local businesses, and connect back to the places that make a city feel like home.

Artist Statement
"I initially bought a camera to help share stories. At some point along the way, I became obsessed with making ‘good’ photos and focused less on the narratives behind those images. I am back—doing what I love, using photography as a tool to share beautiful stories about the people who make our communities, communities."
