How Mission-Driven Entrepreneurs Shape Durham's Future

In Durham's dynamic landscape, mission-driven organizations are more than just economic engines—they're catalysts for social change. These leaders combine innovation with purpose, creating ripples of impact that extend far beyond their immediate reach. Their stories demonstrate how conscious leadership can transform communities and inspire lasting change.

Local Innovators Making Impact

Meet KJ Hill, Founder & Executive Director of ReCity

Meet KJ Hill, Founder & Executive Director of ReCity Network, who transformed a 12,000-square-foot space into Durham's hub for social impact. Beyond providing collaborative workspace, ReCity creates intentional collisions between nonprofit, business, and faith communities to accelerate impact. "Unity is the new currency of social change," KJ explains. "When we bring people together across sectors and silos, we multiply our capacity to transform Durham."

Under KJ's leadership, ReCity has become more than just a shared workspace—it's an ecosystem where collaboration breeds innovation and where community challenges find collective solutions. The space serves as a living laboratory for social change, where organizations can pool resources, share knowledge, and amplify their impact. By breaking down traditional barriers between sectors, KJ and ReCity are pioneering a new model for community development that recognizes the power of unity in creating lasting change.

Meet Nadiah Porter, Founder of Club Clean

Then there's Nadiah Porter, whose innovative approach through Club Clean is redefining what it means to serve Durham's nightlife community. As founder of Club Clean, she views her work through multiple lenses: service provider, community caretaker, and advocate for change. "Durham is not my native community, but it is absolutely my home," Porter shares, highlighting her deep connection to the city she serves. "It's such a special, uniquely special place."

Porter's vision extends far beyond typical cleaning services. She sees each aspect of her work as an opportunity for transformation—whether it's enhancing customer experiences, supporting local businesses, or advocating for industry change. "I approach all work that I do with an activist mind," she explains. "I want to spread awareness about what sanitation really is, and especially in nightlife spaces that often get neglected." Her mission intertwines with a rich family history of cleaners, connecting her work to a broader narrative within the Black community.

What sets Club Clean apart is Porter's holistic view of service. "I really want to support my clients who are fellow business owners, to get them more business," she shares. "A good, positive nightlife experience does not stop at the bathroom door... I see bathroom spaces as potential safe spaces." Through intentional uniform design and joyful customer service, she's creating visibility for an often-invisible industry while supporting Durham's vibrant nightlife scene. As she puts it, "The hard work requires equally dynamic play."

Meet Mike Johnston, Owner of Manifest Skateshop

Consider also Mike Johnston, whose skateshop Manifest has become more than just a retail space—it's a catalyst for community connection in Old West Durham. At age 33, Johnston has transformed his passion for skateboarding into a platform for youth empowerment and community building. "We are grateful to be part of a community who loves skateboarding and recognizes that sharing that love matters," Mike shares, reflecting on their recent initiative that provided 36 donated skateboards to local kids.

Since 2017, Manifest has been more than just a place to buy skateboards—it's become a cornerstone of Durham's growing skateboarding culture. Through various community initiatives and youth programs, Mike and his team have made skateboarding accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or experience level. The shop serves as a gathering space where experienced skaters mentor newcomers, where community events bring people together, and where the culture of skateboarding helps bridge divides between different communities within Durham.

His story exemplifies how mission-driven businesses can create ripple effects of positive change. Through Manifest, Mike has created a space where community and culture intersect, proving that when passion meets purpose, lasting impact follows. The shop's influence extends beyond its walls, contributing to the broader conversation about youth engagement, community spaces, and accessible recreation in Durham.
