In an era where community preservation and cultural celebration are more vital than ever, ChocolateCON emerges as a groundbreaking initiative connecting America's "Chocolate Cities" - urban centers with historical significance to Black communities. Set for April 18-19, 2025, in Washington D.C., this innovative convention is more than just an event; it's a movement fostering liberation, connection, and Black joy.

"ChocolateCON serves as a conduit between Black families and communities," explains Simona Wright-James, the visionary behind the initiative. "We're creating pathways for connection between cities that were, are, or are becoming Black majority communities, starting with D.C., the first Black majority city."

A Convention That Breaks the Mold

Unlike traditional conferences, ChocolateCON pulses with energy and engagement. The inaugural event featured over 35 different activations across multiple venues, including:

• Pop-up performances and Black marketplaces

• Educational sessions led by eight historians

• Interactive art installations

• Technology showcases and pitch competitions

• Outdoor karaoke and skating demonstrations

• Screen printing workshops

What sets ChocolateCON apart is its commitment to accessibility. "We have a history of throwing free events, keeping it at the community level so anyone can access it," Wright-James emphasizes. General admission remains free, with VIP experiences available for those seeking elevated access.

Innovative Digital Connection

2025 brings an exciting addition: a gamified digital passport system inspired by Pokémon Go. This innovative program encourages participants to explore and support Black-owned businesses while earning rewards. More than just a discount program, it's a storytelling platform featuring professional portraits and vignettes about business owners, humanizing their journeys and creating deeper connections between consumers and local entrepreneurs.

Beyond the Convention

ChocolateCON extends its impact through various initiatives:

ChocolateCON Tours (starting February 2025): Guided explorations of landmarks and museums, celebrating Black History

ChocolateCON Pitch: Supporting Black entrepreneurship

ChocolateCON Exchange: The digital passporting system connecting communities

• Community walking tours that encourage people to explore and engage with their neighborhoods

A Movement Rooted in History

Drawing inspiration from Parliament-Funkadelic's classic "Chocolate City," the convention acknowledges the historical migration patterns of Black Americans from the Deep South to northern cities. "We all have a migration story," Wright-James reflects. "This perspective is important for us to keep hold of as we bridge divides between communities."

Looking Forward

With a focus on Black Joy for 2025, ChocolateCON aims to expand its reach while maintaining its core mission of community building and engagement. The organization is working with hotels to secure room blocks and developing partnerships with local tourism boards to establish the convention as a destination event.

How to Get Involved

Whether you're interested in attending the convention, joining the tours, or participating in the digital passport program, ChocolateCON offers multiple ways to engage with this transformative movement. The convention welcomes attendees, partners, and sponsors who share the vision of strengthening connections between Black communities across America.

For Wright-James, the mission is clear: "It's about encouraging people to be observers and contributors to their community. Understanding that wherever your feet take you is your community, and it's up to you to pay it forward."

Mark your calendars for April 18-19, 2025, in Washington D.C., and be part of this revolutionary movement connecting and celebrating Black communities across America.
